Buff Bodies, Fluid Moves, and Money For HIV Treatment

This weekend, Dance for Life — the largest performance-based AIDS fundraising event in the Midwest —will bring together all of these beautiful dancers to raise money for HIV and AIDS.

From the lithe lovelies of Chicago to the buff body of Baryshnikov, dancers are built for strength, endurance, and boundless flexiblity. But what happens when a dancer gets sick? In comes the Dancers’ Fund, an organization created in 1994 after realizing that the dance community was heavily affected by AIDS. It provides emergency financial assistance to dancers living with HIV or AIDS through money raised by Dance for Life, a one-of-a-kind fundraiser in Chicago that helps by raising awareness and money for HIV care, prevention, and education, while promoting the art of dance in the Windy City and giving dancers a way of giving back to the fight against HIV and AIDS. And it's coming back this week.

On August 17,  AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s Dance for Life event will feature five of Chicago’s best dance companies for one night of eight unforgettable dance performances.  Five of the area's best dance troupes will unite on a single stage for Dance for Life: Empowering Chicago from Center Stage, the largest performance-based AIDS fundraising event in the Midwest. (Going since 1992, Dance for Life has already raised millions for the cause.)

This year, Dance for Life introduces two much-anticipated, world-premiere performances by renowned choreographers Randy Duncan, Harrison McEldowney, and Jeremy Plummer as part of the evening’s eight performances. They'll be joined by dancers Abigail Simon and Mauro Villanueva as well as Giordano Dance Chicago, Thodos Dance Chicago, River North Dance Chicago, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and DanceWorks Chicago

Funds raised through this year’s Dance for Life benefit the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, the Dancers’ Fund, and Chicago House. The Saturday Aug. 17 event begins with a gala reception (5 p.m. at the Hilton Chicago International Ballroom) and is capped by the dance performances (8 p.m. at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre). There's a complimentary shuttle bus service provided between the two venues.
