Combination therapy and successful use of prophylaxis meds have dramatically slashed the incidence of most AIDS-related opportunistic infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

But a few OIs remain serious concerns for HIVers, even for people on effective antiretroviral treatment, according to a study in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Severe Risk (a sevenfold increased risk of death)
> non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
> progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

Moderate Risk (more than double increased risk of death)
> cryptococcosis
> cerebral toxoplasmosis
> AIDS dementia complex
> disseminated mycobacterium avium complex
