Watch: Interconnectedness of Rights Featured in "You Can't Kill Light" Video

you can't kill the light

Inspiring and beautiful, Monica Pasqual’s video illustrates the interconnectedness of all civil rights movements — including today's resistance.

Tired of feeling sad and powerless following the election, award-winning singer-songwriter Monica Pasqual became inspired to write the beautiful protest anthem, “You Can’t Kill Light” on the eve of the inauguration. Each verse focuses on a different marginalized group that has had to fight for equality and justice in this country — all of whom are facing backlashes — including feminists, African-Americans, immigrants, Native Americans, and LGBTQ people.

Inspired by Carrie Fisher and Meryl Streep's words, to "take your broken heart, make it into art," Pasqual wrote and recorded the song in one day. Although the video was released on Inauguration Day on her Facebook page, additional images have been added since including those from the resistance movement.   which has since has been viewed over 80,000 times. The video, Pasqual writes, "honors the many amazing individuals, both known and unknown, who have risen up and created movements that change history. These are the people who truly do make America great."
