With the goal of reducing new HIV infections among African-Americans by 50% over five years, the Magic Johnson Foundation and drugmaker Abbott Laboratories have entered into a partnership called 'I Stand With Magic: Campaign to End Black AIDS.' 'I have seen the numbers of HIV infections continue to rise in the minority community, and the time is now to take action in helping to lower those numbers,' Johnson says. 'This program encourages African-Americans of all ages to stand with me and fight HIV by getting tested, getting test results, and encouraging at least four friends or family members to do the same.' According to organizers, the initiative will create educational activities and testing events in U.S. cities with high HIV infection rates. They have already embarked on a 10-city tour of schools and counseling centers to provide HIV testing, education, and additional resources for HIV-positive individuals.
