Haring painted the mural, his largest in Europe, while he had an exhibition in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk museum in 1986.
A Keith Haring mural concealed for the last 30 years in Amsterdam has been preserved and revealed for the public to see, spearheaded by graffiti artist Aileen Middel aka Mick la Rock.
The mural shows a classic Haring figure seated atop a sea monster.
The building on which the mural was painted, Markt Kwartier (Food Market), was scheduled for redevelopment and demolition, and was saved through years of negotiations.
Haring died four years after painting the mural of HIV-related causes at the age of 31.
The restored canopy by American graffiti artist is again on display at the Stedelijk Museum! Haring painted the canopy, which filters daylight into the grand hallway, especially for his solo exhibition at the Stedelijk in 1986.Laying out the velum (which measures almost 40 x 66 feet, 12 x 20 meter) on the floor of one of the museum galleries, he painted it in just one day!
