Antiretroviral therapy may have an adverse effect on thyroid function, and HIV patients taking anti-HIV drugs should routinely be screened for signs of impairment, British researchers reported at the Third International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment. Their studies linked the risk of developing hyperthyroidism to protease inhibitor use and tied hypothyroidism risk to the use of nonnucleoside drugs.
