Peter Piot, the executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, says that because an HIV vaccine is still years away, microbicides offer the most promise in slowing the spread of HIV among sexually active heterosexual women. Some researchers believe microbicides could be on the market by 2009.
