The National HIV/AIDS Partnership, an organization of business, civic, faith-based, and entertainment leaders committed to curtailing AIDS, has announced winners of its annual Red Ribbon Leadership Awards, which honor people and organizations spearheading the fight against HIV. Winners include Joseph Sonnabend, MD; the late U.S. representative Edward R. Roybal, a California Democrat who was instrumental in leading Congress to appropriate AIDS funds; Black Entertainment Television; Playboy Enterprises chief executive Christie Hefner; and OraSure Technologies, the maker of rapid HIV antibody tests, which sponsored the Road to Hope Tour, a national education campaign led by HIV-positive young people who were focused on raising AIDS awareness on college campuses. Calling the award winners 'true American heroes,' NHAP partner Greg Stone, director of occupational health and safety for Ford Motor Co., praised the 13 people and groups honored: 'They have made incredible sacrifices in their lives so that others could benefit.'' For a full list of the Red Ribbon award winners, visit the NHAP Web site.
