Fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids are safe for HIV-positive adults and could even help lower high triglyceride levels caused by antiretroviral therapy, researchers from North Carolina reported in the November 15 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases. Study subjects who received both dietary and exercise counseling along with fish oil supplements posted a 25% mean reduction in triglyceride levels after four weeks, compared with a 2.8% mean increase in blood lipids among those receiving only nutritional and exercise advice. Drops in triglyceride levels remained significant throughout the 16-week study among fish oil users, according to the study.
