Under pressure from the federal government, Illinois has switched from code-based HIV reporting to a names-based system. People undergoing HIV antibody tests in the state can still obtain anonymous screenings, but their names will go into a state database when they go to a doctor or hospital for care. At press time California's senate had also approved a names-based reporting system that moves next to the state assembly.
