650,000 The approximate number of American teens who have exchanged sex for either drugs or money. Researchers conducting the long-term, nationally representative National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health found that 4% of students in grades 7 through 12 reported such sex-for-trade behavior--about two thirds of them were boys or young men. 'While some teens may have engaged in sex exchange as a matter of survival on the streets,' says lead researcher Jessica Edwards, 'it is possible that many engaged in this behavior for other reasons.'
