The first trailer for Dallas Buyers Club, a film based on the real-life story of Ron Woodroof, has been released this week.

Matthew McConaughey lost around 40 pounds to play role of the main character, a Texan electrician who, after being diagnosed as HIV-positive, is given one month to live by doctors. The diagnosis prompts his character to seek more affordable drug treatments abroad. Following their success, he begins to distrubute these drugs in the U.S., which gets him into trouble with the law.

The trailer also features Jared Leto, who portrays an HIV-positive transgender woman assisting Woodroof in his operation, known as the Dallas Buyers Club.

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y, The Young Victoria), the film also stars Jennifer Garner and Steve Zahn, and is set to be released November 1.
