Because of increasing rates of HIV infections with virus already resistant to antiretroviral medications, all HIVers should be given a genetic test before beginning treatment to determine the most effective treatment regimen, urges the International AIDS Society'USA in new guidelines published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. Whenever possible, resistance testing should be offered at the time of diagnosis as part of initial patient assessment, according to the new guidelines.
