HIV-positive men and women with multidrug-resistant infections should talk with their doctors about switching to a cocktail containing the combination pill Trizivir plus Viread, according to a study in the journal HIV Medicine. That regimen prevented significant losses of CD4 cells, particularly among those with baseline counts below 350 at the start of the study; reduced virus levels in the blood (nearly 36% of study subjects achieved undetectable viral loads); and prevented further genetic mutations conveying further resistance to anti-HIV medications.
