HIVers who interrupt treatment have a higher risk of death after reinitiating therapy -- even if they once again fully suppress viral replications -- than do those who stay on their antiretroviral regimens, according to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine. CD4-cell levels do not rebound as quickly after a drug holiday, resulting in an increased risk of opportunistic infections, the study data show.
