HIVers are at the greatest risk of transmitting the virus through unprotected sex during early- and late-stage HIV disease, researchers report in two new studies. High viral loads during primary infection make HIVers 26 times more infectious than during asymptomatic infection; similarly high viral levels during late-stage HIV disease boost transmission risks sevenfold.
