Now HIVers don't have to wait for visible signs of fat loss from the face, limbs, or buttocks to know whether their antiretroviral meds cause lipoatrophy, according to a study in the journal AIDS Patient Care and STDs. Ultrasound measurements of fat thickness in the cheeks, arms, and legs are highly effective at detecting the very earliest signs of fat loss, allowing HIVers and their caregivers to change anti-HIV regimens before more noticeable lipoatrophy occurs, the researchers report.
