When patients experience treatment failure, including failing salvage therapy, studies have shown that those who continue on their regimens experience fewer opportunistic infections than those who stop treatment altogether or begin a structured treatment interruption. Patients who stopped treatment have been reported to be especially susceptible for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, toxoplasmosis, mycobacterium infection, and lymphoma in the brain.
