Treatment Action Group, a New York'based research and treatment advocacy organization, released a statement in late June stating that the group 'remains committed to the fight against the global [HIV] pandemic.' The statement came in response to criticisms that the group has lost its focus and that its relationship with the pharmaceutical industry has dulled the activist spirit of its founders. Barbara Hughes, a member of TAG's board, dismissed critics who had faulted the group on various Web sites as 'dead-enders' who represent a 'perverted interpretation of AIDS treatment activism. If we allow these crackpots to alter our day-to-day activities, then they win.'
