PRO 2000, a microbicide developed by Indevus Pharmaceuticals, has been shown to reduce the HIV infection rate of vaginal cells exposed to the virus by 1,000 times, according to a study in the January 1 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases. The gel also conveyed significant protection against herpes. PRO 2000 works by binding to the surface of HIV and preventing if from latching onto immune system cells.
