A skin biopsy can accurately predict the onset of antiretroviral-related peripheral neuropathy within the subsequent six to 12 months, University of Rochester researchers report in the journal Neurology. A skin biopsy that assesses epidermal nerve fiber density and pain thresholds for hot and cold temperatures can predict neuropathy risks. Lower nerve density and a higher threshold for pain is strongly linked with future risk of neuropathy in the feet and legs, the researchers conclude. Neuropathy is associated with certain nucleoside analogues.
