Despite having no calories or carbs, diet soda still can lead to weight-gain problems, scientists report in Self magazine. Artificial sweeteners interfere with the body's natural ability to determine how many calories it needs. The more diet soda you drink, the more calories you're likely to eat. For every diet soda you drink each day, your overall risk of becoming overweight can rise by as much as 37%, the researchers say. And forget those sugar-laden sodas'they pack more than 200 empty calories, nearly as many as a candy bar. Need a low-cal fizzy drink? Try seltzer with lime. Or just stick to good ol' water.
