Gay and bisexual HIV-positive men are at such a high risk for human papillomavirus'related anal lesions'the precursor to anal cancer'that they should regularly be screened for the condition, researchers write in the International Journal of STD & AIDS. HPV screenings and anal Pap tests, which can detect precancerous lesions, should be a part of routine HIV medical care, the researchers say. And because the incidence of lesions and cancers is unaffected by antiretroviral therapy, even HIVers with well-controlled infections should be on the lookout for the conditions.
