In another significant rebuke of the ideological research and medical policies of the Bush administration, President Obama in March lifted the eight-year federal ban on new embryonic stem-cell research, a field that holds promise of powerful new treatments or cures for a vast number of injuries and diseases, including HIV. The stem-cell directive came at the same time the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy was instructed to 'develop a strategy for restoring scientific integrity' to government decision making.
