Guys should encourage their caregivers to routinely screen them for early signs of anal cancer, according to a new study. Researchers, reporting in the April 1 edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, found that virtually all HIV-positive men who have sex with men are anally infected with the cancer-causing human papillomavirus. Analysis of participants revealed that 97.9% of the 247 men studied were anally infected with HPV, 90.9% carried multiple strains, and most had at least one high-risk viral strain linked with anal cancer. Worse yet, few of the HIVers were able to naturally clear the most risky strains from their bodies'and many of those who did eventually became reinfected.
