With a looming Trump presidency in our near future, civil rights organizations will need our support more than ever. Trump has made a point of scapegoating just about every minority group, and the appointment of white supremacist Steve Bannon, former head of the nationalist Breitbart News, as his chief White House strategist proves we can’t afford to give Trump a chance to be president for all Americans. This holiday season, let’s focus on the positive change we can make. In the spirit of giving, donate to these 25 organizations in the names of everyone on your gift list.
1) Lambda Legal
Lambda Legal is the country’s oldest and largest organization working for the civil rights of LGBT people and people with HIV or AIDS. In the wake of the election, CEO Rachel B. Tiven wrote a letter encouraging supporters to keep fighting. Lambda Legal also has a post-election FAQ page. You can donate to Lambda Legal here.
2) Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood will face more attacks on providing women’s health screenings, birth control, and abortion services in the coming years. Read Cecile Richards’s post-election message, and donate here. You can also donate a holiday gift to Planned Parenthood in Mike Pence’s name.
3) NAACP Legal Defense Fund
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund provides legal assistance to poor African Americans and civil rights and voting rights activists, and brings lawsuits against violators of civil rights. Watch what LDF President and Direct-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill has to say about the election results, and donate here.
4) Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)
CAIR was established to promote a positive image of Muslims in America and to counter misrepresentations of Islam through education, advocacy, and civil rights work. CAIR’s work will be more important than ever under a president who has promised to ban Muslims from entering the United States. Donate here.
5) International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP)
IRAP organizes law students and lawyers to enforce a set of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced persons. One dollar of every $10 donated goes directly to legal assistance. Donate to support IRAP here.
6) Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)
The Southern Poverty Law Center has been combatting hate, intolerance, and discrimination through education and litigation since 1971. The SPLC is also one of the most important hate group watchdogs in the country, and have been collecting hate incidents in the wake of the election. SPLC has been quick to call out hate speech in the Trump administration and the appointment of white supremacist Steve Bannon. Donate here.
7) Environmental Defense Fund
We cannot afford policies that ignore climate change for the next four years. The Environmental Defense Fund is a nonprofit environmental advocacy group using sound science, economics, and law to find environmental solutions that work. Support their mission by donating here.
8) National Center for Transgender Equality
The National Center for Transgender Equality is a national social justice advocacy organization fighting for the rights of transgender Americans. Read Mara Keisling’s statement on the election results, and donate here.
