Here Media Garners Five Maggie Award Nominations

The Maggies, an annual journalism competition organized by the Western Publishing Association, has honored Here Media, parent company of HIVPlusMag.com, with several nominations this year.

Both HIV Plus and The Advocate are finalists in five categories of the 63rd Annual Maggie Awards.

HIV Plus, a leading resource for issues related to HIV and AIDS, is a contender for best print publication in the Special Interest/Consumer category. In the past year, editor in chief Diane Anderson-Minshall has led the magazine in its coverage of the scientific and social impact of HIV and AIDS, and provided an outlet for the voices of celebrity advocates such as Jared Leto, Kelly Osbourne, Mondo Guerra, and Mark Patton.

Advocate.com was nominated for Best Web Publication for overall content; Best Regularly Featured Web, eNewsletter or Digital Edition Column for a series of op-eds by managing editor Michelle Garcia; and Best Use of Social Media for its annual Day In LGBT America event, which encourages LGBT people to share glimpses of their daily lives through networking services. Well-known news outlets Mother Jones and Truthdig are among the competitors in these categories.

Moreover, @Gaysayer, an LGBT comedy Twitter feed maintained by Jami Smith, received a nomination for Best Social Media Community. Smith, a writer for Advocate.com and a rising star in the LGBT comic world, has garnered over 10,000 followers for The Advocate Comedy with virtual interactive events that include roasts of celebrities and a recent live stage competition for comedians.
