San Francisco's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Historical Society launched a two-year effort in May to document the early years of the AIDS crisis. The project will gather organizational and personal archives that reflect the personal, political, and cultural response to the pandemic. 'It's only by getting access to these kinds of records that we can begin to truly understand and appreciate the ways in which people have dealt with and continue to struggle with AIDS,' says historian Nan Alamilla Boyd. The project is supported by a $170,000 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
