Low levels of HIV persist in the body for years, despite effective antiretroviral therapy, according to National Cancer Institute scientists. Their study of HIVers on successful antiretroviral regimens for seven years showed that while all had viral levels not detectable through standard screening methods, more sensitive tests showed 77% had persistent low-level viremia. Based on their findings, the researchers conclude that currently available medications do not completely purge the virus from the body and that, unfortunately, HIVers must remain on their antiretroviral regimens indefinitely.
