Because of increasing rates of infections with virus already resistant to antiretrovirals, all HIVers should be given a genetic test before beginning treatment to determine the most effective regimen, the International AIDS Society-USA urges in its newest guidelines. Whenever possible, they say, resistance testing should be offered at the time of diagnosis as part of initial assessment.
